At a time when people are opening their windows, taking a deep breath and getting their homes ready for spring and summer, it is business as usual for many business owners. At The Growth Coach, we often talk to our clients about getting out of the day-to-day operations of the business so they get out of the weeds and focus on business and revenue growth rather than the specifics. So, if your business has been running you, now is a great time to spring clean your mindset, make changes and start fresh.
Keep your business from stalling by changing your mindset and working on these three things this season:
Your Staff: If you’re going to get out of the day-to-day operations of the business, there has to be someone (or multiple someones) to step into the roles you’ve been playing. That often means a few things: rearranging current job roles to account for increased duties, promoting team members to appropriate leadership positions and then training the next level of staff members to fill in as needed. This is also a good time to make sure your staff is engaged in the growth and development of the business and perhaps consider some professional development, especially for new leadership.
Revenue Development: Once you’re able to pull back from being a personal employee handbook and manual, set meetings with yourself to evaluate goals, network, follow-up on pending leads, attend chamber events and just generally get out into the community to promote your business. As a small business owner, people are often doing business with YOU, not just your business, so it’s important to be in the community making an impact.
Recharge: If, as the business owner, you’ve been the go-to person for every question or concern, there’s a good chance you’re suffering from business owner burnout at some level. Once your staff is in place and you’ve been able to switch at least some of your focus from business operations to business growth, it’s time to take a break. For many entrepreneurs, owning a business is a 24/7/365 job. That doesn’t leave much time to dream and plan for the next big thing. Take a much-needed vacation, spend a little more time at the coffee shop and devote a portion of your time to considering the future of your business as well as your own future. This is also a good time to make sure your work/life balance is in check.
